Would this doctor visit make you nervous too? I need some serious help and advice please!?

Sorry this is so long but I don’t think my doctor knows what he is doing and I’m a little nervous about how my appointment went. Thanks to anyone who sticks around and reads this!

My period is 23 days late! I have never been that late before, my period is regular down to the hour. I have taken a few pregnancy tests and they came out negative. But I have been having some pregnancy symptoms. So on wednesday I went to the gynecologists office and got a urine test done there, it was negative. So I decided I wanted to figure out what was wrong and wanted to schedule a visit. They told me they could get me in the next day (yesterday) but it was with a new doctor. I don’t have a regular gynecologist so I scheduled the appointment.

I went in for my appointment, the nurse took me into the room took my blood pressure and weight, all the usual and then asked my what my symptoms were so I told her: Sore nipples, headaches, heartburn, cramping in my lower abdomen and back (different from pms cramping) and more frequent urination.

The doctor came in a minute later and asked me when my last period was, I told him on july 23. He said (and I quote) “okay that’s good that rules out pregnancy!” How does that rule out pregnancy? Anyway, then he told me I had a UTI. Other than having to use the bathroom more often (but not constantly) I have no symptoms of a UTI none, zero, zip, nada! He gave me a sulfur based medication that I *might* be allergic to!

THEN, he asked me if I was on b/c. I’m not because it messed with my hormones to much and people around me feared for their lives while I was on it. I told the dr. that I have been off it for a year and a half. He said that the fact I have been off b/c for so long and I’m not pregnant concerns him and I have a problem with fertility!!! Let me also note that my husband and I have NOT been trying for a baby (not that we would be sad if I got pregnant, we’d be happy) but, I even told the dr that we were NOT trying.

The doctor decided he wants to start me on clomid so that I can get pregnant within three months AND he wants my husband to do a seaman analaysis! I know this sounds stupid but my husband (who doesn’t know yet becuase he is out of town) is going to be very upset when he finds out, he told me he never wanted to do that because if he ever found out he was sterile he wouldn’t be a man anymore. I know it’s stupid but that’s how he feels.

So the dr didn’t even talk about my peroid being gone–I still don’t know why. He didn’t order any urine or blood tests, he didn’t do any sort of exam. All he did was pick out one of my symptoms and tell me I had a UTI and that I have fertility problems!!! What should I do! I don’t know if I should start clomid, and I don’t know how to tell my husband that he has to do a seaman analaysis! I’m a little bit nervous about this! What do you guys think?
EDIT: Sorry I meant to say I should have started my period on july 23 and my last period was in june. sorry I kind of rushed that a little bit.

Have you tried entering your symptoms at webmd.com? Might be of some help, as far as your doctor wanted your husband to do a semen analysis, if you know he doesn’t want to then don’t force him. Are you trying to get pregnant? (I had my period for almost 4 months when I was pregnant with my daughter and I was on birth control) Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion, if you have a quality doctor, than he will not mind that you get a second opinion.

I say hold off on the clomid. If you’re not trying to get pregnant, than you shouldn’t worry about trying to get pregnant with clomid. I don’t understand why the doc is trying to help you get pregnant. Next I would definitely see a different OB for a second opinion.

ok first of all how are you 23 days late???? its not even the 23rd of the month yet. i honestly dont see what the problem is

also frequent urination is not a sign of pregnancy until you are 7-9 months along and the baby is sitting on your bladder

Go get a second opinion. Don’t start taking that medication and don’t make your husband worry for nothing.

It is still possible to be pregnant. He should have ordered a blood test. In some females the HCG hormone isn’t concentrated enough to detect on a urine test. Especially if not tested with first morning urine.

You might have a hormone imbalance, stress, diet, exercise, changes in weight, taking meds all these can affect your period. Even if you are like clock work the littlest thing can effect you sometimes without you realizing it.

This docotor sounds like he was rushed to give a quick diagnosis.

DON’T even fill out the prescription for the clomid. That doctor was a complete f***ing idiot!! Seriously, he didn’t even focus on what your complaint was or listen to you at all.

He should have investigated for Endometriosis, and also PCOS, not just assumed it was an UTI. Where did he get his degree? Kornflake U? Seriously.

Get a second opinion. Fill in a feed back form and tell the practice of your feelings about this lame ass doc, otherwise he’ll just go around assuming everyone wants babies!! Bloody hell Harry!

As for the sperm count, if you want babies, and have difficulty TTC one day, then he will have to get it done, so they know what they’re dealing with. It is very rare that a man is infertile, even with very low sperm counts, they can use IVF to make a baby. Does he have a reason to suspect he’s infertile? It wouldn’t be fair on you for him to not get tested if this is an issue one day, otherwise you’ll just be banging your heads against the wall wondering why you’re not preg. yet.

  6. Carlos M Says:

Get another opinion before anything else. See a different gyn at another office. Don’t say anything to your husband until this entire debacle is cleared up. There was an obvious breakdown in communication here but it wasn’t your fault. Don’t take those meds until you’re sure you need them.Good luck.

I have a had many problems with female stuff, I have seen gyno after gyno and it took them a long time to figure out what was wrong. Anyway, my suggestion is to get a second opinion. DO NOT take the antibiotic if you think you may be allergic, especially if you are home alone (husband out of town). There is no need to worry your husband until you speak with another doctor. Tell the new doctor your concerns about the old one, the will most likely be more sympathetic, and listen to you better. You know your body better than anyone, if you don’t think their advice is correct, get more opinions. Also you may have a tubal pregnancy which is very serious so see someone else immediately if possible. I have found emergency rooms are the most helpful. Hope this helps and hope you feel better!

  8. Zaara Says:

I think you are not pregnant because you tested negative for it.

UTI and fertility problems needs more evidence to prove. The doctor should have done urine culture test, medical history, physical exam, and Urinalysis before starting you on some medication for UTI.

There are lot of other health conditions where the female stops having periods like hyperthyroidism (irregular menstrual cycles). Talk to another doctor or brings this issue up with this doctor.

    GOOD LUCK

  9. Downtown Girl Says:

I don’t see how you are 23 days late if you had your last period less than a month ago..? But anyway, it sounds like your doctor has “tunnel vision”, which is basically what happens when a doctor has an idea in his head (like UTI and infertility), and inadvertently ignores the patient.

But as a patient, you have a responsibility to be assertive and set him back on track. I think your doctor knows what he’s talking about, he just got carried away and forgot to listen to you.
