Treating gum disease may boost a man’s fertility?

Yes. I have some personal experience with this. I had quite a lot of gum recession. To correct this, I had 8 gum surgeries (soft tissue grafts) and changed many life habits. Previous to this treatment I was infertile or sub-fertile, and some time after my treatment and lifestyle changes I was able to father children.

There are two problems. What caused the gum disease, and the the disease itself.

Causes of gum disease can include a poor diet, lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, incorrect brushing technique, incorrect care of gumline (sulcus toothbrush recommended), genetics, tooth orientation. Some of these things can be controlled, some cannot. By correcting all areas you can, you will improve health and fertility.

The gum disease itself is something like a constant seemingly incurable bacterial infection. If you take all the damaged gum areas and add them up, they total a large surface area. Thus, their total affect on health and fertility can be rather pronounced.

Treatment effect of soft tissue graft (gum recession): periodontist grafts tissue from palate to affected gum areas. The idea is to strengthen and support the existing gum tissue, and allow it to heal. The palate gum tissue is keratonized, and somewhat tougher in construction than normal gum tissue around the teeth.

Other treatments: deep cleaning of gums. Designed to remove bacterium from under the gum tissue.

Recommended individual behavior to improve gums: eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, avoid alcohol mouthwash which dries the mouth, try to keep the mouth moist, avoid sugary foods, use soft tooth brushes on tooth surfaces, use only sulcus toothbrushes on the gum line, floss daily, avoid tartar control toothpaste – the only ingredient in your toothpaste should be sodium fluoride, replace toothbrushs very often and definitely before they curl (nylon bristles become damaging to gum tissues when they harden).
