My friend recently found out she had a STD and only sleeps with one guy. Her partner was tested and came up clean. Is this possible?

Im 18, male and wondering what are the chances i can get an STD or impregnate a girl even while using condoms? Is it common for everyone in USA to have STDs these days? I see so many sexually active people around me. Have they just accepted the fact that they will get an STD one of these days? Please enlighten me.
